Match Report: Sevilla v Real Madrid

Posted by Kenjo on October 5, 2009  •  Comments

Madrid suffered their first loss of the season last night, and deservedly so. They weren't as amazing as they've looked in their previous fixtures, which was quite disappointing given their newly acquired talent. Although missing CR7 (or should I say CR9 now?), out from an injury occurring in a Champs League match midweek, Los Galacticos shouldn't have any excuse for their result.

First, Guti's 1st half performance was less than impressive especially after her got in a tussle with both Perotti and Zokora at the same time. After this incident, he decided to squander the free-kick opportunity when it was obvious he had lost his head (why did he even take it?). Anyways, everything after the tussle was shi-ite from Guti (then again I never really liked Guti...maybe it's the hair), who couldn't string one pass together until the 2nd half.

Those tragic Guti turnovers led to the brilliant goal by Sevilla - attacking from the left, Perotti fakes an in-swinging cross from the corner of the box, back-heels it to Navarro, who floats in the lefty cross to Navas...Navas with the near-post header.

Which leads me to possibly the player with the worst performance of the night, Marcelo; I'm not sure whether to feel pity for him for having to play against the brilliant right-winger Navas or whether to say that Marcelo really was a donkey out on the field.

Marcelo's attacking play was lacking, he defending was lacking... I guess the only thing I can say that wasn't lacking is his uncanny, twin-like resemblance to Robinho. Also, I can't help but mention how he got caught sleeping on Navas' goal. When the cross came in, he just stood there waiting for it. He might as well have been a cone on the field at that moment. His opposite, Navas, having possibly the best performance on the pitch last night, was just TAKING it to Marcelo. The pace, accuracy of crosses, fearlessness, robbing Marcelo of the ball on various occasions...He was the epitome of a great right winger.

Other Notes:

-Why did Raul play the whole game? He really didn't look good at all. Instead of Raul coming out, Pellegrini took out Benzema. Not to mention that Raul pretty much LET Renato score the game-winning goal. I know he's not a defender, but I expect better from a player of his experience and caliber.

-Kaká's performance: meh, average.

-Real's whole defense was less than satisfactory. Pepe, although one of the best defenders on the pitch, can't stop every attack single-handedly or be everywhere at once. He was even the only one that scored for Real, against the run of play.

-Casillas had one of the most amazing saves on Perotti's 3-yard shoot (Watch it on footytube Chamo, trust me). I was sure it was an absolute sitter, but somehow Casillas made it all the way to the other side of the goal to deny Perotti. Mentioning that, Sevilla should have scored 3 or 4 goals on the night, but Casillas and Pepe kept them in the game.

---Chamo side note: I just watched the video of it Kenj, he made two that were absolutely incredible from point blank, that is insane! However, his cross the goal save was the most impressive, he covered tons of ground and STILL made the save from 3 yards out!

-Luis Fabiano had a pretty good game. He should have had at least one goal, but somehow managed to put a free header wide.

-Real's defense seemed to focus more on containing the leading COMEBOL-WC-qualifying scorer, which allowed Navas to run rampant on the outsides.

To conclude, Sevilla is a team to watch out for this season (Or at least watch Navas; if his recent form is consistant, del Bosque has gotta consider calling him up fo sho). I wouldn't be surprised if Sevilla take the number 2 spot, by the time winter break comes. However, for them to take one of the top 2 positions by May might take something special, as they won't have as much depth as Madrid or Barcelona. Sevilla may not have deep pockets, but their players are more than worth their value.  But last night, they definitely out-worked and out-played Madrid....finishing the week with a well-deserved win.
