Match Report: Cal Poly v UC Davis

Posted by Chamo on October 4, 2009  •  Comments

I must admit rather disappointingly that this was my first trip to watch the boys play at home. They awarded me with a well fought battle against bitter conference rivals UC Davis in a match up that constantly produces rough-and-tumble games. I made it to the field just after half time (another disappointment) to learn that we were up 1-0. This is how the next events took place:

I walked into the stadium with my friend from the Davis club team (who we had just beat 3-1 an hour earlier) only to run into Babka, another club player. Babs runs me through how the goal occurred and at that exact moment I realize Cal Poly has a new scoreboard that has a video screen. Apparently I am really bad at keeping up with developments, I had no idea it was put in. The replay of the goal then is shown, and I have only this to say.

DC, if you ever read this, did you take that long to shoot the ball just to make the Davis keeper feel bad? I mean, you did have all the time in the world, but it looked like you stalled just to rub it in his face and make him dive again. Still, a solid goal from the Cal Poly resident Canadian (we know how I love Canadians!).

The second half was all Poly, with a very brief scare when the sideline referee inexplicably claimed that Poly keeper Pat McClain had grabbed the ball just outside the box, but the resulting Davis freekick smashed into the wall. The Mustangs had multiple opportunities to put the match away, but managed to squander them all, still the second half seemed a comfortable one for the boys to hold onto.

Despite the hard luck start to the season, the past two matches have resulted in positive conference results that will help our Poly boys pressure UCSB at the top.

Other Notes:

- Poly has four captains. Four. I agree with every single selection as they are all great players and postivie leaders, but I have never seen a team with four captains.

- I am currently debating if I like or loathe the new Poly uniforms. I don't mind the hoops, but I feel like the Cal Poly should be written across the front, not the back.

- This result coincided with the Club team's dominating performance earlier which resulted in another Poly victory. Along with that win the Club team also managed a hard fought 2-2 draw at UCSB inside Harder Stadium. A great start to the season for our National Title aspiring team.
