EPL Round 7 Predictions

Posted by Biggy and Chamo on September 24, 2009  •  Comments

Chamo took the lead in results while Biggy broke the tie in score predictions, but neither of us did as well as our reader Doug who scored an incredible nine out of ten results, as well as a correct scoreline. We are getting to the point in the season where the table begins to take its shape and this week should start the seperation of the top teams from the less than stellar. Here are our predictions:

Biggy:

Poor Chamo finally bested me in our pursuit of picking, our excellence in EPL, and our chase of correctness. Even though he spent his week hinting at the loss of work for “Bad Decision Bob” or Bob Bradley as the world knows him, I know that this week I will return to glory and my rightful spot on the Winner's Blurb section. What I will say will remain a mystery to all, myself included until Sunday afternoon. This weekend brings us some interesting matchups, primarily West Ham squaring off with Man City in a game that certainly will be entertaining. Arsenal and Fulham square off in what can be described as “Biggy's favorite EPL team derby” and Chamo's Chelsea squares off with what can only be described as a lackluster Wigan side. For reference, I make my picks off of the Fantasy Premier League's match fixtures on the bottom left of the main page so if you are making yours at home and are looking for a site to base the games off of, I recommend it.

Portsmouth 0:3 Everton – Just what the doctor ordered for a slow starting Everton team, a Portsmouth team that looks to have mathematically clinched relegation by the turn of the new year. The only team left with zero points, Portsmouth continues to hold down this less then illustrious honor, and Everton starts to shake off the cobwebs and return to the attacking form that they have shown the last couple years. About time.

Birmingham 1:0 Bolton – In a match up between two teams that could currently be described as less then thrilling, Birmingham retains the form that has them sitting just outside the top half of the table. Of course, that is only a mere three points away from being part of the drop zone. Birmingham has looked good at home, and can pick up the full three Saturday.

Blackburn 1:2 Aston Villa – Villa has shown that they can beat both good teams and bad teams this year. However wretched teams is a whole new ball game, and as long as Villa doesn't overlook this game, they should leave with three points behind goals from Young and Petrov.

Liverpool 2:0 Hull City – Every time I pick something good to happen for Hull City it doesn't. I don't think they will get points in Liverpool, but I have been wrong before. I'm still not convinced by this Liverpool squad that they are that good, however, Torres is sublime and a brace for him leaves Hull in the bottom four and looking for answers.

Stoke City 1:1 Manchester United – Fresh off a derby win, United overlooks a solid Stoke squad, and needs a late Ryan Giggs strike to steal a point. Giggs is then named soccer player of the decade, as he is tireless and incredibly impressive. United however is not, and this lackluster performance leaves United fans troubled.

Tottenham 3:0 Burnley – Tottenham may not be the real deal, but they still can score a lot of goals against really bad teams. Burnely isn't really bad, but when squaring off with Defoe and company are made to look it.

Wigan 0:2 Chelsea – The new question is, can Chelsea score in non added time. Like, time that was regularly scheduled? The answer is yes, however it takes sixty five minutes for Chelsea to finally break through Wigan's backline, and two minutes for them to do it again. Anelka and Kalou tally for the Blues.

Fulham 1:3 Arsenal – Fulham's form of late has been less then convincing. Arsenal is starting to click again, and against what could be described as an anemic Fulham side, Arsenal has little trouble beating up on their London neighbors.

Sunderland 2:0 Wolves – Sunderland seems to be sneaky. They score when you aren't totally paying attention, and suddenly they have beaten you. They emerge on the top half of the table out of nowhere and suddenly you are behind them in points. Darren Bent puts one home to ensure the win at home.

Man City 3:2 West Ham – City rebounds from a soul crushing loss, however playing defense doesn't seem to be much of a priority for either of these teams. Fans and fantasy teams reap the benefit as another high flying Man City game leaves everyone but the goal keepers raving for more.

Chamo:

I won't go on an extended tangent about how much better I am at this than Biggy, but just know that it is true. In terms of big name matchups there really are none, but that doesn't mean I do not believe there will be a surprise or two. Lets jump right to it:

Portsmouth 0:2 Everton No explanation needed. Portsmouth suck. Period.

Birmingham 1:1 Bolton These are the two scrappiest teams in the league that are capable of causing any team trouble (including themselves), but when they match up it becomes misses galore and ends as a drab draw. I'm still waiting for that opening goal from Ferguson, so this, again, I predict will be the week. Late response from Kevin Davies makes this a draw.

Blackburn 1:3 Aston Villa I really hate to see Blackburn struggle, but they have injury woes and a terrible attack without Benni (and they don't start Franco, which is horrifying). They scrounge up a goal, but this match is all Villa.

Liverpool 3:1 Hull City Its too much to ask for Hull to get the points at Anfield, especially with Torres on form, but Liverpool's incredibly shaky defense succumbs another less than pretty goal against a sub-par team. While they still get the three points, they will not be happy about their goal differential which could be so much better if their back line would just perform for two or three matches in a row.

Stoke City 1:4 Manchester United Biggy seems to have something out for United, as every week it seems he has them dropping points. While I was also in that boat for a while, United seems to have found their scoring touch, while their defense and goalie situation are something to be worried about.

Tottenham 3:0 Burnley Just what Tottenham needed after two matches against the big boys. Crouch, Defoe and Lennon bag one each as Tottenham cruise back into their rightful spot just behind the big four plus one (City of course).

Wigan 1:3 Chelsea Wigan gives Chelsea problems every season, for whatever reason. However something important happened this week that everyone in the league should be terrified about, I'll let you take a guess: He's here, He's there, He's every f***ing where!

Fulham 1:2 Arsenal Much like how Wigan gives Chelsea issues, Fulham seem to be Arsenal's kryptonite (namely Hangeland who seems to play out of his mind against the Gooners). While they go up early to a Dempsey strike, they flounder in the end as van Persie scores a immaculate double.

Sunderland 3:1 Wolves Sunderland screwed me last week, but I need Bent to score a hat-trick for my fantasy team, so 3:1, Bent hat-trick. In my dreams right?

Manchester City 1:2 West Ham The shocker of the week, but West Ham has been in form, while somewhat unlucky. Also, City still have huge defensive issues to address, and against a striker like Carlton Cole....we will see. They struggled with Rooney, so I think they will struggle with Cole.
