EPL Round 5 Predictions

Posted by Biggy and Chamo on September 10, 2009  •  Comments

So we have added a couple twists to the EPL prediction game during international week. Chamo is hard at work adding a new spot on the site on the front page where whoever performs better between he and Biggy will have about the length of a tweet to say whatever they want. Biggy's early predictions on what will go up there: If Chamo wins, it will be all about Mexico and Chelsea, and how good they are, but if Chamo loses, he might unknowingly confess his love to Bob Bradley for the world to see. It gets better. If you throw your picks in the comment section, and do the best out of everyone who predicts in the comments, we will let you have a shout out on the front page too. Make sure to include your email address in the top of your comment so we can reach you, we will screen your comment for anything too ridiculous, but anything within reason is going up there. Get on it and get your picks in before games start Saturday.

Biggy:

After a glorious week of internationals, all the big boys return home back to the world of tapping up and moving down. The EPL returns on ESPN, and while they only seem to cover the games that will likely have the most goals (and the big 4) we cover them all. After Chamo somehow managed to tie me up last week, I again believe in miracles, yet skill will overcome luck long term. On which side of that equation I fall is quite debateable.

Blackburn 0:1 Wolves
The trend of American goalkeepers in the EPL continues, and the trend of the new boys making some noise early in the season does as well as Wolves snatches points on the road.

Liverpool 2:1 Burnley
Burnley gives it a valid go, but gives up goals from Torres and Gerrard in a span of five minutes with only fifteen to go, painfully giving up road points.

Man City 1:2 Arsenal  City's first real test exposes them to what the big four really looks like. Fabregas continues his torrid form, bagging two.

Portsmouth 0:1 Bolton  Old Pompey looks like they could just concede the season now after selling anyone with value. Bolton snags an away winner to bag all three points.

Stoke City 1:2 Chelsea
The first point drop of the year for Chelsea isn't happening here. Too much class and too much Drogba keep Chelsea at the top of the table.

Sunderland 1:1 Hull City
Hull City continues to surprise their critics, stealing a point on the road. Goals from Ghilas and Bent keep this one level at full time.

Wigan 0:2 West Ham  Stop. Hammer time. At least at Wigan it is, where Carlton Cole and Johnathan Spector each bag goals off corners.

Tottenham 2:1 Manchester United  The Spurs show that United is wanting, and United shows they are wanting the transfer window already.

Birmingham 0:2 Aston Villa
Villa's offense continues to click, and goals from Young and Milner keep their dreams of top four alive.

Fulham 1:0 Everton
This must be a dream because when Eddie Johnson not only comes off the bench, but bags a winner late for Fulham, I realize things are not real at all.

Chamo:

After a thrilling week of qualifiers which revealed a good amount of detail as to who we can expect to see next summer, we now return to the Premiership grind. There are some exciting match-ups as we return to league play and the match that takes the cake has to be the revenge of Adebayor and Toure as Arsenal travel to Manchester City. This is City’s first major test to see how they fare against the “Big Four” clubs and prove they are worthy of joining the ranks of the elite. Elsewhere, United have a tough trip to face in form Tottenham at White Hart Lane, Everton look to fix their current standing with a trip to Fulham and Portsmouth may have a chance to get their first points of the season at home to Bolton. I wouldn’t put my money on it though…

Blackburn 1:0 Wolves   Blackburn need to pick up points and the only way to pick up points is to score goals (well technically you can tie 0-0… don’t correct me). With only one goal in three matches, Rovers will want to take advantage of their experience against the new boys in the Premiership. Blackburn will want to take advantage of their home field as well as the continued absence of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. A goal from a Gamst-Pedersen free kick separates these two.

Stoke 0:3 Chelsea  Chelsea will want to continue the impressive run of form they are on and considering the positive impact many of their players had in their international matches it isn’t hard to believe this will happen. Though fatigue will set in second half and see the Blues slow down, an early flurry with goals from Drogba, Lampard, and Essien are more than enough to hand Stoke a loss.

Liverpool 4:0 Burnley  Burnley has a huge test trying to overcome Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds will want to give their faithful fans a show, since their last home outing ended with such a ridiculously poor performance against Aston Villa. Burnley get stuck in, but it leads to a mid game red, which only makes things easier for Gerrard, Torres and Co. who coast easily in this one.

Sunderland 1:1 Hull City  Hull continue to surprise me, and that has lead to me incorrectly predicting too many of their matches, this time even though I am convinced Sunderland should win at home against the Tigers, I am going with a draw, with Bent and Cousin scoring either side of the half.

Manchester City 1-3 Arsenal  Despite all the opportunities they create, City continue to struggle scoring more than one goal as Adebayor tries too hard to score against his old club. The visiting fans get their laughs as “Adebarndoor” misses time and time again and Bellamy doesn’t manage to get onside for any of his runs. The loss of Arshavin is cancelled out by the potential losses of Santa Cruz (guaranteed), Robinho and Tevez.

Wigan 1:2 West Ham  Carlton Cole has another blinding performance, and this time manages to not hand the opposing side the tying strike to give the Hammers an ever important away win. Rodallega strikes early for Wigan, giving the Latics some hope, but Cole strikes twice on the other side of the half to seal the win for the bubble blowers.

Portsmouth 0:0 Bolton  Even the struggling Bolton don’t hand Portsmouth their first three points of the season. All the new players Portsmouth scrounged together late in the transfer market combine poorly, and the loss of Kranjcar is noticeable, but the heroics of James manages to snag a point for Pompey, and at least makes it so no one is left in the league without a point.

Tottenham 2:1 Manchester United  United have been abysmal, and any United fan who thinks otherwise is wrong. Straight up. They are wrong. Tottenham, however, is on fire and takes it straight to United with goals from Kranjcar and Robbie Keane that sends Fergie into such a fervor that flames start shooting from his mouth.

Birmingham 1:3 Aston Villa  Villa start to recover the form that saw them break the top eight last season, and despite giving up a goal, manage to comfortably control the match with the work of Ashley Young. Carew comes on for the Villans and scores with just three minutes left to end the Birmingham storm they throw late.

Fulham 2:2 Everton  All is not well despite a late point for the Toffees. They desperately need Arteta back and it gets proven this match, as they play much too linearly, without any positive creativity. Saha and Pineaar scores sandwich a Zamora header, while an early Hangeland header had put the Cottagers up, but both of these sides will be disappointed with their performances

Comments

Blackburn 1 - 1 Wolves: Neither of these teams seem to know where the net is, I think this will be a horrible match to watch. Wolves will be more than happy with a point here though... so, even if they go ahead first or equalize, I think a draw is likely.

Birmingham 0 - 1 Aston Villa: If Villa score first, I think they'll win it, but it'll be a fairly tight/tense derby game. Birmingham's defence has been pretty good... they sit quite deep, like they did at Old Trafford, so they can handle the likes of Ashley Young's pace. Agbonlahor to nick it though.

Fulham 1 - 1 Everton: Tough one to call. Fulham have disappointed so far, after their heroics last season. But it's early... they're playing a struggling, but improving, Everton. Pienaar to get a late equalizer (just because he's in my fantasy team).

Liverpool 3 - 1 Burnley: Away from home, Burnley are a different animal, but I can still see them nicking a goal against a somewhat more suspect Liverpool defence this season. Kuyt to get a hattrick (again, fantasy team is doing my talking here!)

Man City 1 - 1 Arsenal: Arshavin is injured, right? Anyway, this is Man City's first test of the season... I see them rising to this challenge and at least getting a draw out of this game.

Portsmouth 1 - 0 Bolton: Both teams have yet to score a point so far, something has to change. I'm going to give it to the home team. Yep, I'm actually predicting Portsmouth are able to win a Premiership football match.

Stoke 0 - 2 Chelsea: Will the controvery surrounding Chelsea hamper them? Will it inspire them? I think it'll make no difference, as Chelsea cruise to another win, despite Stoke being solid at the back, at home. I think I have Drogba as my main striker in FPL, so he's going to score two.

Sunderland 2 - 0 Hull: Hull are not the best on the road, I think the Sunderland Bent/Jones combo will be too much in attack for them.

Tottenham 1 - 2 Man Utd: Enough said ;)

Wigan 1 - 1 West Ham: The form book says West Ham win, but they'll stop the rot here in my opinion. Charles N'Zogbia with a 50 yard overhead volley to win it, in the last kick of the game.

** I like the site guys... keep it going! I've been reading some of your articles since you posted the link in FCP, really great stuff (apart from the Manchester United are abysmal nonsense, obviously! haha, j/k) You've got a pretty wide range too, not just Premiership, which is cool :)

Later,

James.

Winners
So the results are in, Biggy beat me head to head, by a single result, as we both correctly guessed one score, but he got five results while I only got four.

In the comments however, we had a tie. Both Matt and James guessed one score correctly as well as five results. Jeremy got six results (well done) but we give more weight to correct score predictions, thus Matt and James still end up ahead.

The tie-break goes to James, for calling that Agbonlahor would nick it, which is exactly what happened, (sorry Matty J, that was a rather impressive prediction).
