EPL Round 4 Predictions

Posted by Biggy and Chamo on August 27, 2009  •  Comments

Round 4 is upon us, and our next round of predictions are in for this upcoming weekend. Biggy currently has a one point lead over Chamo in the result department, while neither of us correctly guessed any scorelines last week. Hopefully these picks see some results match our predictions, as we dive once again into our Premier League picks.

Biggy:

Since I'm busy thumping Chamo in our EPL predictions, I figured I'd spend extra time working on them this week. No, no I didn't. I'm just that good. The EPL is off to a brilliant start, and my lack of faith in Liverpool seems to be the truth. However, I did not count on the Spurs to step their game up in a hurry. Meanwhile, Chelsea is blazing a path that no one seems to be able to follow. How long will this continue until they run into a wayward Norwegian referee that sends their season into a tailspin? Only time will tell.

Chelsea 3:0 Burnley  Chelsea is torrid hot right now and will continue. Too much quality for Burnley, given that Chelsea doesn't overlook the new boys, who are doing work on in the Prem already. Goals from Anelka, Lampard, and Mikel (yes Chamo, that Mikel) keep Chelsea at the top of the table and acquire them more bandwagon fans, who have been cheering for Chelsea "for years now"

Blackburn 1:2 West Ham  The Hammers had an ugly midweek tie with Millwall, and are going to need to rectify their image, and quickly. Nothing like beating up on one of the most pathetic teams in the EPL to make everyone forget you got in a fat brawl with your local rival during a cup tie. Or not.

Bolton 1:2 Liverpool  Liverpool seems to get these cake games right after a major loss, and this one is no different. An unconvincing win puts more pressure from the Kop on Rafa and company, and makes me feel more justified in picking them for the five ball spot.

Stoke City 1:2 Sunderland  Another dynamic EPL strike partnership makes an impact as Bent and Jones each bag a goal to steal points at Stoke. Sneaky Sunderland suddenly becomes the dark horse for a Europa spot.

Tottenham 2:0 Birmingham  In a battle of 'hams the Tottenham Hotspurs, behind Defoe, who Chamo left on the bench in fantasy last week, continue thumping teams. Defoe bags another as does silly Peter Crouch. PETTTTAAHHH CROOUUCCHHHH

Wolves 0:1 Hull City  Jozy Altidore quickly becomes the most important striker acquisition in Hull City's prem existance as he gets one on the road and literally by physical means forces Bob Bradley to start him.

Man United 2:3 Arsenal  Don't look now, but Arsenal's defense looks good, so does their midfield, and RVP wakes up this week at United, bags himself a hat trick, and Arsenal establish themselves as the real deal.

Portsmouth 0:3 Man City  Portsmouth. Sucks. Simple as that. City is going to run them over with the new formation they have implemented after reading my post earlier this week and Ade gets two more, making him the first candidate for, WTF why did I not pick him for fantasy EPL.

Everton 1:0 Wigan  Everton needs to get the train back on the track, and a home match with Wigan is a perfect opportunity. Behind 8 saves from Tim Howard and a late Saha goal, Everton wins for the first time all season and permanently exits the bottom three.

Aston Villa 1:1 Fulham  Villa really didn't play that well to beat Liverpool, and although it was an impressive result, I don't think they can beat what has to be an inspired Fulham team after they sucked against Chelsea. Goals from Agbonlahor and Dempsey make my fantasy team very happy.

Chamo:

So I came out behind Biggy last round, by only one, no matter how badass he thinks he is. His bold call that Villa would beat Liverpool paid off for him, and it seems this week again he goes for an underdog victory with Arsenal on top of United at Old Trafford. While I commend his cajones, I’ll be thinking of my picks a bit more logically this week, and hope to take the lead where it really counts, the correct result board.

Chelsea 4:0 Burnley – Chelsea have finally settled into their element under Ancelotti, and while Owen Coyle’s Clarets have performed the miraculous Chelsea will prove too stern a challenge, especially at Stamford Bridge. Drogba bags one, while Anelka gets a brace of assists to Lampard and Malouda while Sturridge comes off the bench and nets a 90th minute sitter.

Blackburn 1:2 West Ham – Zola has had issues getting both the funding and the go ahead to make some rather incredible signings that would have benefitted the Hammers greatly, but I still think the small Italian has all the necessary coaching ability to take West Ham to a European spot. I have trouble deciding if Blackburn has looked useless or unlucky, but Rovers definitely need some results to make the fans more likely to believe that they can stay up this year.

Tottenham 3:1 Birmingham – Tottenham has been more than impressive, though I should amend that and say Jermaine Defoe has been more than impressive, this term. Birmingham has all the makings for a stay in the top-flight, but that holds no weight against a team on form like Spurs. Defoe scores a brace, while Modric gets rewarded for proving me wrong and not being the useless player I claimed by getting a goal.

Wolves 1:0 Hull City – Hull has been fortunate thus far this season, and Wolves have been just the opposite.  Though they have been lacking the major threat of Ebanks-Blake recently, Wolves find a way through the Hull City defense in the first 30 minutes via a set-piece, and the defensive heroics of Mancienne and Craddock hold Wolves out for a vital 1-0 victory.

Bolton 0:3 Liverpool – Rafa needs results and needs them fast. Bolton are a sorry side right now, and even as hard as it is to play at the Reebok, Liverpool will cruise as long as Rafa doesn’t keep faith in players that have no duty (like Lucas and Voronin). Should Rafa fail against Bolton this week, don’t expect to see the Spaniard at the Kop much longer, because if he isn’t fired, his head will be on a stake. Torres, and a Gerrard double help Rafa stay at Liverpool one more week.

Stoke 0:2 Sunderland – Sunderland are a scary team, with Bent and Jones both on form, and seemingly playing well as a tandem, the Stoke defense  can do nothing but chase this potent strike force as each bags a goal, and Sunderland cruise comfortably at Stoke’s home ground. Stoke need some reinforcement in the Center Back area, and they should put a rush on the Huth transfer, as it might help the outcome of this one.

Manchester United 2:2 Arsenal – Match of the week, naturally, Manchester United will look to gain ground on the top teams after the shock loss to Burnley a week ago. They did well to recover last weekend with the 5-0 demolition of Wigan, but Arsenal seem to be in a class above recently, though should Eduardo try any of those diving antics again I wouldn’t be surprised if Rooney bit his head off. A tight fought match sees United jump to an early lead, with Arshavin spoiling the party with a late stunner. RVP scores the first for Arsenal, while Rooney and Fletcher score for United.

Porstmouth 0:2 Manchester City – Portsmouth are dismal right now, though the takeover that has been in the works has finally been completed. A little too late though, as the market closes on Tuesday. City still struggle to put away this one, but win comfortably while Adebayor continues his scoring streak, and a Barry penalty seals it.

Everton 2:1 Wigan – Everton are in need of a result, and will be hoping to prove to the Toffee faithful that they are not a lost cause this season. Their performance in Europe has been quality for the most part, but that will mean nothing to the Merseyside squad if they can’t repeat their league form of last season. Wigan has had a decent start and look to have all the makings to be the surprise team I thought they would be, but against such a strong willed Everton side, they will struggle to contain them. Saha and Pineaar score to give Everton a deserved win.

Aston Villa 2:1 Fulham – Regardless of Villa’s failure against Rapid Vienna today, the Villans rested key individuals ahead of this weekend’s clash against the injury plagued Cottagers. While Fulham tries to rebound after a supremely poor performance, the lack of firepower up front without AJ, as well as possibly Zamora, leaves them with little scoring threat. Carew and Delph score before Nevland gets a lifeline, but nothing more.
