Friday: The Cup Beckons (MLS Cup Recap)
So I was fortunate enough to travel to Seattle for my first MLS cup this past weekend and it was a spectacular experience that I was so lucky to participate in. I took my camera and hopefully can share some of the best parts of the weekend via both pictures and words, as neither quite describes the majesty and awesomeness that this weekend was. I'll break it up by day so it's a bit more manageable and readable, and hopefully worthwhile.
Seattle was merely a dream three months ago, as my buddy Shawn who lives up there had suggested that I should leave the sunny side of the world and go join him in Seattle for MLS cup. Being that I was both unemployed and poor, I didn't see this happening. However, five minutes after I recieved my offer for my job, I was on the phone with Team Seattle and planning a trip that had me overjoyed. Great soccer, exploring a city I'd never been to, and kickin it with Shawn. Fast forward a month, and it's friday afternoon and I'm antsy at work, just watching the clock tick down. Really, it was more that my flight was at 9pm, and I was just killing time in the city until I was outbound. At about six fourty five I headed out of the office in downtown San Francisco to a what was an ominious sign, dark and gray skies.
I quickly walked toward the BART station, which is the train system that runs through the Bay Area, that got me to work that morning and would whisk me away to the airport that evening. I thought I was destined to beat the rain, but my last second stop at Bank of America for some scrilla left me fourty yards away from the entrance to BART when the rain started to come down. Painful that as I headed towards the City of Rain, I couldn't escape any in sunny San Fran. I jumped on BART and headed toward SFO.
Thirty minutes later, and I am in one of my favorite place in the world.
Seems strange but I love airports, particularly SFO, such an interesting mix of people and I always find myself wondering where people are going, and what has brought them here. My favorite airline, Virgin America happens to be located in the international terminal, which is gigantic, and pretty cool.
Another fun thing about airports is that it often brings out the worst in people. Particularly the guy behind me in the security line, who was grumbling about everything as we waited. Finally, as some guy struggled to figure out what exactly needed to go down the X-Ray machine, he spit out the first winner of the weekend. "Come on, some of us have a plane to catch!" Dear sir, you are catching a plane? I'm just here for the delicious cuisine and the ambiance. He couldn't have been too excited as I turned around and started laughing. Oh well, that what happens when you say such glorious things. Got to my gate, and Seattle summoned me, via red lights.
I jumped aboard Virgin America 748 and was greeted as always with the awesome black lights and music. Seriously, VA just has things right when it comes to flying. TVs, free internet access thanks to Google, and cheap fares make a spectacular trifecta that makes them my number one choice. Try them out, you will see my ranting and raving actually has something worthwhile behind it for a change. Two hours later, and a touchdown in Seattle, which is more then the Seahawks can say on most days. I bounced out of the plane and headed for baggage claim, to where I was greeted with a glorious surprise, a sign of things to come.
