Cal Poly v UCSB Preview

Posted by Chamo on November 3, 2009  •  Comments

Tomorrow night the two top squads in the Big West will be pitted against each other in a match that has league title implications. After Cal Poly's devastating loss to Davis over the weekend, the Gauchos down in Santa Barbara are in sole possesion of first place, having been in a dead heat with the Mustang's up to that point.

In the match earlier this season between these two powerhouses at Harder Stadium, UCSB brought the match to the Mustang's dominating the game offensively, but only winning by an unconvincing 1-0 margin. Beyond that, Cal Poly staged a late surge that included a shot that rang off the bar, signaling both how competitive and how uncertain these match-up's have come to be.

While Cal Poly had a rough start to the season, their play has improved in league as the Mustang's hold a 6-3-0 record in the Big West, while only boasting a 8-9-1 record overall this season. With only three matches left including the game against the Gauchos, Cal Poly will have to win out the rest of the season to challenge for top spot of the Big West.

UCSB, as has become common over the past few years, is a force to be reckoned with. Ranked #4 in the country, the Gauchos have only lost three of their 17 matches this season and are regulars at the top of the Big West.

This same fixture last year produced record numbers in fan attendance at Spanos Stadium and was featured on FSC as the game of the week. While FSC is not televising the game this year, still expect to see a good turnout, I assure you this is a game you do not want to miss.
